History of Midsummer House

Midsummer House was originally an island surrounded by the River Cam. A gentleman started to build a line of terrace houses all the way round the common. Midsummer House was one of these houses but was built without planning permission so the council repossessed the house and gave it to the common keeper who looked after the cattle grazing on the common land. The house was then sold to the owners of the Fort St George pub where it was used as a home for many years, it was then bought by a gentleman called Jack Lang who was the first person to turn it into a restaurant. Jack then sold the premises to Chris Kelly from the BBC Food and Drink programme who then sold this business and premises to Russell Morgan. Daniel Clifford and Russell Morgan formed a partnership in August 1998 with the dream of putting Cambridge on the culinary map.

The railings at Midsummer House are the only original railing left in Cambridge as all the rest were remove during war to be used for metal.

The apple trees at Midsummer House are thought to be around 80 years old, we have 2 different varieties of apples which are used in our menu.
